Big Head Byron
aka: Big Head, Bat

Big Head was the most innocent seeming of all our babies. Those big beautiful, soulful eyes set in that big grey head. We had been calling him Big Head for obvious reasons, when one day Amy took a wrong number call asking for Byron...thus Big Head Byron was born. He was just such a sweet, little fat potato; always snuggling and romping with his siblings and cousins (who were also his aunt and uncles).

One night last summer I heard an awful howl. I jumped out of bed to find poor Big Head who had been able to pull himself just inside the cat door from outside, writhing in agony, gasping for breath. I checked his airways for foreign objects, tried to give him air and then he was gone. Invariably, he had been run over by a car. It was and is still very traumatic. I wrapped him in one of my shirts and placed him on his favorite east-facing rooftop so he could have one last sunrise. The next day seven year old Lucy insisted on helping bury him. We did so with him in the white tee-shirt, flowers from Amy's gardens and pictures of his family. His pictures and memory still elicit such joy and overwhelming sorrow.
